The answer is yes. And you are far from the only one who arrives at Taucho with that knot in your stomach.
At Brisa, we have spent over 25 years sharing the experience of flight with people from all over the world. And if there is one question we hear time and again before take-off from our launch site in Taucho, Adeje, it is exactly this one. So let me tell you, with complete honesty and from the experience of hundreds of flights, what actually happens when someone with a fear of heights lifts off for the first time above the south of Tenerife.
What You Feel on a Balcony Is Nothing Like Flying
There is a fundamental difference between the sensation you experience when peering over a cliff edge or looking down from a rooftop terrace, and what happens when you are airborne. The brain processes the void in a completely different way once your feet leave the ground.
On solid ground, when you lean over an edge, your visual system detects the distance to the ground and triggers an alarm response. That is a perfectly normal protective mechanism. However, the moment the wing lifts you gently and you begin to move through the air, that sense of an edge disappears entirely. You are no longer leaning over any precipice. You are gliding. And for the vast majority of people, that changes everything.
The feeling described by our passengers once airborne is almost always the same: calm, wonder and freedom. A world away from the jolt of panic they feared.
Taucho: The Launch Site That Dismantles the Myth
The launch site we use at Brisa is located in Taucho, in the municipality of Adeje, at around 800 metres above sea level. It is not a leap into the void. Not even close.
The Taucho launch site is, in reality, a natural sloping ramp from which you take a few steps, first walking, then jogging, whilst the wing inflates above your head. The canopy begins to support your weight before you have even registered what is happening. The moment of take-off is a smooth, almost imperceptible transition in which you simply stop feeling the ground beneath your feet and begin to float.
The Adeje massif acts as a natural barrier against the prevailing winds, which ensures that the wing inflates in a stable and progressive manner. This means there are no surprises at Taucho. Every take-off is planned, every condition assessed. If the wind exceeds 20 km/h or conditions are not optimal, we simply do not fly. The calm of the environment is part of our guarantee.
Your Pilot: The Invisible Engine of Your Peace of Mind
When you fly with Brisa, you do not fly alone. Your pilot-instructor, with over 25 years of international experience and certifications from APPI and FAI, as well as a Sport Technician qualification in Paragliding and an official active tourism licence, is seated directly behind you and maintains complete control of the aircraft at all times.
Your only role is to enjoy it.
Before take-off, your pilot will adjust every element of your equipment: a certified helmet, a harness seat, knee pads and gloves. You will feel as comfortable and secure as if you were settled into an armchair, with your hands completely free to gesture, take in the landscape, or simply stretch out your arms and feel the Atlantic breeze against your palms.
Connecting with your pilot means connecting with decades of reading the skies above southern Tenerife. He interprets the trade winds, the thermal currents of the valley and the aerology of Taucho before every single flight. That expert reading of the environment is the first act of care towards you, long before you take your first step on the launch ramp.
What You Will See from the Air (and Why It Matters)
One of the most powerful tools against a fear of heights is, curiously, beauty. When the brain has something extraordinary to focus on, it stops looking for the ground.
As you gain altitude from Taucho, the Roque de los Brezos emerges like a volcanic sculpture at your side, whilst below you the spectacular landscape of the Barranco de Erques unfolds, one of the most impressive protected natural spaces in the south of the island. Behind you, the Teide dominates the horizon like a reassuring presence, a silent witness to every flight. And if you look out towards the Atlantic, the silhouette of La Gomera accompanies you throughout the entire glide until we touch down, with complete smoothness, on the coastline of southern Tenerife.
I can tell you from personal experience, after more than two decades flying above this island, the landscape never stops being breathtaking. And that visual wonder is, for many people who arrive with a certain wariness about heights, precisely what transforms the whole experience.
The Video Recording: An Unexpected Ally
This is something not many people consider. Having a camera in front of you is actually a gift for anyone carrying a little tension into the flight. If you add it as an optional extra, your pilot will film the entire experience with a latest-generation GoPro, from your first steps on the Taucho launch ramp right through to landing on the coast. Knowing you are being filmed activates a natural mechanism of posture, presence and attention to your surroundings that shifts your focus away from what you are feeling and towards what you are living.
Many passengers tell us, when they watch their footage back after the flight, that they do not recognise the anxious expression they expected to see. What they see is wonder. It is always wonder.
What Those Who Arrived Full of Doubt Have to Say
| Before the flight | After the flight |
|---|---|
| I don’t think I’ll be able to do it | Can I come back tomorrow? |
| I’m frightened of heights | I didn’t feel the drop at any point |
| I’ll be screaming the whole way through | I couldn’t stop smiling |
| I need convincing | I’ve already recommended it to all my friends |
This table is not a figure of speech. It is the pattern we see repeated time and again at Brisa.
Frequently Asked Questions About Paragliding with a Fear of Heights
Can I go paragliding if I have a fear of heights?
Yes. The sensation of vertigo experienced when looking over edges or cliff drops is very different from what happens during a flight. Once airborne, without any sense of a nearby edge, the vast majority of people experience calm and genuine enjoyment. Your Brisa pilot-instructor will be with you every step of the way.
Can I cancel the take-off if I lose my nerve at the last moment?
Of course. At Brisa there is never any pressure. If at the moment of take-off you need to pause, your pilot will handle it calmly. There is absolutely no obligation to fly if you do not feel ready. Though in our experience, almost no one regrets taking that step.
How high will we fly?
The launch at Taucho-Adeje is at around 800 metres. Depending on thermal conditions, the pilot may use rising air currents to exceed 1,000 metres, always within optimal safety parameters. The duration of a standard flight is between 15 and 20 minutes.
What should I do if I feel uncomfortable during the flight?
Tell your pilot immediately. He can stabilise the flight, guide you through breathing techniques and visual grounding methods, and if he feels it is appropriate, bring forward the landing in a controlled manner. Communication throughout the flight is continuous and in your own language.
Are there any medical restrictions?
There are no specific medical restrictions for this flight. You need to be able to walk and jog a few steps, and maintain a seated position. If you have a particular condition, get in touch with us before booking and we will assess it on an individual basis. The activity is not suitable for pregnant women.
Is paragliding suitable for children?
Yes, from a minimum weight of 25 kg. It is an experience the whole family can share, and a perfect one for a holiday in southern Tenerife.
