Paragliding as Stress Therapy

Parapente como terapia contra el estrés

Do you feel trapped by the relentless noise of daily life? There is a moment — just as your feet leave the ground and the Trade Winds wrap around you above Costa Adeje — when everything weighing you down simply vanishes. It is not magic, though it feels like it. It is pure physiology. And at Brisa, we have spent over 25 years witnessing that transformation, flight after flight.

Why Paragliding Is, Quite Literally, Therapy

When I talk about paragliding as stress therapy, I am not using it as a tagline. I say it as an instructor who has watched hundreds of passengers land at Playa de la Enramada wearing a smile they did not have at take-off.

The explanation lies within your own body. Chronic stress has a hormonal culprit: cortisol. The adrenal glands release it in response to accumulated pressure — work, screens, noise. When levels remain elevated for weeks on end, both body and mind begin to suffer. What happens during a tandem paragliding flight is that this cycle is interrupted in the most radical way possible.

In the first seconds of flight, the autonomic nervous system receives an unmistakable signal: you are here, you are present, there is nothing else. The amygdala — the brain structure that processes constant alertness — focuses entirely on the present moment. The result is that the ruminating thoughts that follow you around on the sofa or in the shower simply find no room to exist.

Then, as the glide stabilises and the silence of the sky surrounds you, the brain releases its own cocktail of wellbeing: dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. Dopamine rewards you for taking the leap. Serotonin regulates your mood. Endorphins produce that sensation of quiet euphoria that so many passengers describe as “I don’t know what’s happened to me, but I feel absolutely incredible.”

The Flow State at 800 Metres Above the Barranco del Infierno

Psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi described the Flow state as that moment of absolute concentration in which time disappears and the mind operates at its fullest capacity without conscious effort. Elite athletes spend years chasing it. You can experience it on your very first flight.

Flying tandem from Taucho, with the Teide commanding the horizon behind you and the depths of the Barranco del Infierno opening beneath your feet, creates precisely those conditions. The mind cannot be anywhere else. It cannot check emails. It cannot dread Monday morning. It can only be there, suspended between sky and Atlantic, as the silhouette of La Gomera appears on the horizon — a quiet reminder that the world is far larger than your worries.

This is mindfulness in its purest form: effortless, present-moment awareness with no app, no guided audio, no timer. Paragliding compels you to be here and now in a way that no guided meditation can replicate.

The Antidote to Anxiety

There is a paradox I know well — the people who most need to let go of control are the ones who enjoy it most when they do. Many of our passengers at Brisa arrive with exactly that profile: travellers who recognise in themselves a tendency towards constant worry, what psychologists call generalised anxiety, and they land transformed.

The reason is resilience. When the body faces a situation of controlled activation — such as taking off from Taucho with views across Costa Adeje — and discovers it can handle it, that it even enjoys it, the nervous system learns something new about itself.

That experience becomes encoded. And research into neuroplasticity suggests that this kind of intense, positive lived experience has the capacity to reorganise stress-response patterns over the long term.

It is no coincidence that many of our passengers are devoted to yoga, meditation or Pilates. They recognise something familiar in the flight: conscious breathing, total presence, the sensation of floating.

Tenerife South: The Perfect Setting to Switch Off

The geography of southern Tenerife is no minor detail in this equation. The Trade Winds that define the Canary Islands create exceptionally stable flying conditions, which translates into a smooth, predictable glide — ideal for those seeking calm rather than acrobatics.

From 800 metres above Adeje, the landscape acts as visual therapy in its own right. The turquoise waters of Costa Adeje stretch as far as the eye can see. The deep green of the Barranco del Infierno contrasts with the volcanic aridness of the hillsides. And the Teide, ever-present, offers that cognitive perspective that only altitude can provide: problems, seen from above, take on a different scale.

The landing at Playa de la Enramada — gentle, precise, feet touching sand — closes the experience in the most satisfying way imaginable.
