This iconic natural space in Tenerife is a proper geological gem that majestically stretches across the Adeje municipality. Far more than just a ravine, it’s a unique ecosystem housing some of the Canary Islands’ most precious natural treasures.
The ravine’s botanical richness is absolutely remarkable, featuring numerous endemic Canarian species. The vegetation includes ancient dragon trees (proper old-timers, those), hardy spurges dotting the slopes, and towering cardón cacti standing like proper sentinels. You’ll also spot native Canarian palm trees, juniper bushes, and a diverse understory of plants that have adapted brilliantly to this unique microclimate.
Wildlife-wise, it’s a proper sanctuary for various birds, including the Canarian kestrel, the long-eared owl, and the blackcap. You might catch Canarian wall lizards sunbathing on rocks, while various endemic invertebrates (found nowhere else in the world, mind you) call this place home.
The nearby village of Taucho, perched high above the ravine, offers some of the most breathtaking views of this natural wonder. This charming little traditional settlement isn’t just about the spectacular vistas – it’s also the perfect launching point for all sorts of outdoor activities, including paragliding with Brisa Paragliding. Hiking Activities
Barranco del Infierno Trail is an absolute must-do in Tenerife. It’s about 6.5 km round trip, with moderate difficulty – nothing too scary for reasonably fit hikers. Along the way, you’ll find some proper gems, including a spectacular viewpoint and a lovely waterfall at the trail’s end.
For the best experience, you’ll want to bring:
- Decent hiking boots – your regular trainers just won’t cut it here
- Plenty of water and some snacks for energy – trust me, you’ll need them
- Sun protection and a cap – the Canarian sun can be quite cheeky
- A camera to capture those Instagram-worthy moments
- Pre-booked tickets – they limit access to keep the place pristine
